In partnership with Meta, the Linux Foundation has released new insights that show how open source artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful force for driving down development costs and speeding innovation. Open source frameworks have become a key enabler for making AI development more accessible and impactful as companies around the world seek faster and more cost effective ways to deploy AI in their business.

The central finding from the Linux Foundation is that open‐source AI allows organizations to eliminate a major barrier for them – software licensing expense which is typically a major barrier for startups and smaller enterprises. With free, well supported AI models and tools maintained by global communities, businesses can leverage advanced machine learning and deep learning solutions for far lesser overhead in comparison to proprietary technology offerings.

Open source development has had a major proponent in Meta (formally Facebook). Meta has been making large language models like LLaMA (Large Language Model Meta AI) and other frameworks available with powerful models in order to allow researchers and developers to build on strong AI foundations much more easily. Facilitation of these contributions fosters a transparent, collaborative culture which then lets academic institutions, tech firms and independent developers work their magic at a much greater and more rapid rate than while utilizing traditional, centralized systems of software delivery.
